Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strengthening and stabilizing the spine while incorporating movement in the upper and lower extremities. Pilates exercise was designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The goal of Pilates is to keep the spine healthy while improving total body conditioning, strength and endurance.
Pilates focuses on principles including: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow. These principles are the foundation of all exercises in Pilates. Pilates can be done with a mat (no equipment), a reformer, chair, tower, or other modalities. Pilates instructors will guide participants through the exercises focusing on incorporating the principles into each movement.
Pilates is safe for nearly everyone. Exercises can be modified for those with injuries to the low back or other area as well as pregnant women.
